What Does the Light On My Dashboard Mean?

Dashboard Lights

Many Lexington drivers have asked us at Short Redmond SuperStore, “What does the light on my dashboard mean?” Each warning light means something different, and different auto brands have other dashboard lights. The most common dashboard warning lights indicate engine check, oil pressure warning, battery charge, and tire pressure warnings. Learn more about your dashboard warning lights below, and if you have questions, check your owner manual, or contact us for help.

Dashboard Warning Lights Meanings

Below, you’ll find descriptions of some of the less common dashboard warning lights to watch for as you drive around Richmond:

Engine Warning Lights:

  • Reduced Power Warning – This dashboard warning light means that you need to have your engine serviced immediately and should make a service appointment at Short Redmond SuperStore.
  • Coolant Temp Warning – This will come on when your coolant levels aren’t right, which may cause your fan not to work correctly.
  • Service Vehicle – Typically, this light will illuminate when an electrical issue occurs.
  • Cruise Control – This is not a warning light. It simply indicates that your cruise control is in use.

Brake System Warning Lights:

  • Traction Control or ESP – This light means your car’s electronic stability system is in use, so it’s not a warning indicator at all.
  • Brake System – This dashboard warning light means there’s an issue with your brake system. Perhaps the brake fluid is low, or there’s a problem with the ABS.

Safety & Informative Warning Lights:

  • Washer Fluid Reminder – Your washer fluid is low and must be filled.
  • Security Alert – If your car door is ajar or your ignition switch is locked, this light will illuminate.
  • Fog Lamp – This light simply reminds you that your brights are on.
  • Airbag Fault – If this comes on once the car has been started, it indicates that there’s a fault in the airbag system, and you should bring your car in for a repair.

Tire Warning Lights:

Tire Pressure Warning Light When the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is on, one or more of your tires has an incorrect tire pressure level. Check your vehicle’s PSI and adjust it as needed.
