How to Change a Brake Light

Car brake lights

Whenever you slow or stop your car in Richmond, your brake light turns on, so it’s expected that the light bulbs will burn out after a while. Once a light bulb burns out, you can bring your car to a local repair shop or you can fix it yourself to save some money! Follow this guide from Short Redmond SuperStore on how to change a brake light before getting back on the roads, so you can avoid an accident or a ticket.

Step-By-Step Guide to Changing Your Car’s Brake Light

Read on to find out the simple steps on how to change a brake light below:

  1. Find the Correct Bulbs – Before you start replacing the light, you will need to know what bulbs your car uses. If you’re unsure, consult with your owner’s manual for the exact size and voltage for your vehicle model!
  2. Remove Tail Light Housing – After having your replacement bulb, you can finally work on the light directly. With a Phillips-head screwdriver, remove the colored lens that hides the brake light bulbs. Once you remove the cover, you should be able to take out the bad bulb.
  3. Replace the Brake-Light Bulb – Have the replacement bulb in your hand and apply a bit of dielectric grease to the end to prevent corrosion and rust. It also makes it easier to remove the bulb when it’s time to change it again. Put the replacement bulb in place, reattach the tail light housing, and you’re done!

Why Check Your Tail Lights?

Whether you have a brand new vehicle or a pre-owned one, you don’t want to drive with a broken light on the Danville roads. You use your tail lights to signal to other drivers what you are trying to do whether that is making a turn, trying to stop, or reserving. So if your car’s tail lights don’t work, then other drivers won’t know what you are trying to do and that confusion can lead to an accident. While a fix-it ticket will remind you of the importance, you will ultimately want to change your broken brake light to prevent any accidents.
